“人马宫”是半人半马射箭的造型，梵文原文为“弓”，故译作“射”；“宝瓶”是人倾斜水瓶的形象，故译为“水器”。

至于羊身鱼尾的动物形象称“磨竭”，则是梵文makara的音译（后来为了切合羊身的形象改为羯，羯是阉割过的羊），这也是后来88星座中唯一保留音译的星座。

到明清时期，黄道十二宫的译名基本稳定，除“阴阳”、“双女”外，其他与现用名完全相同。直到康有为的《诸天讲》，才将“阴阳”、“双女”分别译为“双子”、“处女”，与现代所用名更为接近。
